“The best laid plans of mice and men…” This is the quote that comes to mind as I continue to strive toward earning my CPCU designation. It seems my journey has taken a few twists and turns along the way.
My original estimate of completion was 2011 and now in 2014 I am still one class away. “Why?” you might ask. Life just has a way of getting in the way of the goals we set. This is why we call them goals and adjust them as needed. Do not let the setbacks make you waiver from your goals. Whether it’s a failed test, an illness in the family or you just need extra time. It’s okay to change your goals as long as you don’t give them up.
I am a staunch supporter of continuing education and everyone in my branch has listened to me expound on how I went from being a file clerk to where I am currently at today. I know in my heart it was from the continuing education courses I kept taking and not just my work ethics. Education has always been an important part in my life. My mother tells me I was her one child that always asked, “But why?” Now as an adult I still need to know why.
I also have to admit that our local chapter of the CPCU Society has picked me up when I have fallen. It did not matter where we worked. It mattered that we had common goals. As I was struggling with CPCU 556 one of the local Chapter members would send me emails of encouragement every week. As time grew closer to my test the emails came more frequently. I cannot tell you what that encouragement meant to me. A simple gesture but important.
Our local Chapter took it one step further. We implemented a program where we sent emails congratulating everyone who took a test through the Institute. That simple recognition has helped grow our members and given everyone the encouragement to continue. In our company alone we have at least six people taking CPCU courses since I have started my journey and many others taking continuing education.
